The H I Theories of Consciousness.
Four Speculations.
There are four H I (Hemispheric Intelligence) speculations about consciousness. Each covers a different aspect of human consciousness and, taken together, give a significant advance in my own ability to understand consciousness and, potentially, an ability for science to confirm or modify that understanding through research.
The four speculations (or theories) are not co-dependent in the sense that those that prove to be inadequate over time will not invalidate the others.
The significant contribution of these speculations is to provide a potential for testability in a controlled physical environment.
The H I Description of Core Consciousness.
This approach cuts “The Hard Problem” down to size by extending the traditional model of the mind from Consciousness and Nonconsciousness by adding a semi-conscious ‘Intelligence’ layer. Further, structure is added to consciousness and intelligence by applying evolutionary and behavioural principles which allow an outline logical definition of Core Consciousness.
The H I revised model of the mind and consciousness allows for better understanding of the diverse behaviour and states of consciousness that are evident in humanity whilst identifying the functions that represent the core of consciousness. This approach simplifies the problem of understanding consciousness by associating human behavioural functionality to specific brain hemispheres within an evolutionary perspective.
Core-Consciousness
Using the H I Mind Model to focus in on the core of consciousness.
The H I Description of Consciousness Characteristics.
This examination identifies the key components of conscious, the enablers of consciousness. These basic components are, I suggest, essential for consciousness to exist.
Consciousness Characteristics
Component attributes of our consciousness.
The H I Description of Conscious Awareness.
This speculation describes a potential evolutionary step-by-step process leading to the self-awareness, that is at the heart of consciousness, and on to general intelligence that supports human consciousness. This theory is similar to many descriptions of the evolution of perception and suggests how increases in complexity over time enables new capabilities to emerge.
Evolution of Conscious Awareness
From crude sensing to full consciousness.
The H I Speculation on Hemispheric Consciousness.
This final speculation theorises the fundamental nature of consciousness. It proposes some physical brain-based processes that could be the basis for our experience of dynamic consciousness. Self-awareness as both the observer of self and the object of that observation. This is perhaps the most novel of the speculations presented here.
This theory aims to provide ‘testability’ of consciousness by future research. By identifying specific mechanisms that may be related to specific brain areas, the establishment of the physical basis for consciousness may finally be established.
Consciousness in the Brain
The role of the brain hemispheres in producig consciousness.
Taken together, these theories could offer a functional appreciation of consciousness as something like “Consciousness is the multi-layered shared awareness of self, following a memory-based timeline from the recent past to a predicted future.”
